Recommended requirements include: 1) Training, 2) Reading, and 3) Case Exercises. Following this you will be able to take the online certification examination.

Training:

Training is required to understand the appropriate use of the AMA Guides. Without structured education most individuals have found it very difficult to apply the Guides correctly. At least 16 hours of educational content are required; with 6 hours of these obtained in a structured learning environment (a live seminar, either in person or web-based) and the remaining may be obtained through other seminars or independent learning experiences. Training must be provided by an approved trainer, highly experienced in the use of the AMA Guides.

AMA Guides Reading:

Read the following chapters in the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fifth Edition prior to taking the examination:
  • Chapter 1: Philosophy, Purpose and Appropriate Use of the Guides

  • Chapter 2: Practical Applications of the Guides

  • Chapter 13: The Central and Peripheral Nervous System

  • Chapter 15: The Spine

  • Chapter 16: The Upper Extremities
