- Impairment Resources reviews the physician’s
impairment rating report to determine
the probable correct impairment rating
for each ratable diagnosis using the
applicable edition of the AMA Guides.

values for each ratable diagnosis and
provides a brief written report outlining
the conclusions as to the accuracy of
the original impairment rating assigned

variance between the original rating

Impairment Resources will contact the
adjuster and recommend an ImpairmentExpert™.

ImpairmentLetter™ - Impairment
Resources writes a letter to assist
the adjuster with obtaining the appropriate
impairment rating from the physician.
There are three types of Impairment
Letters: Letter of Guidance; Letter
of Clarification; Letter of Analysis.
The letter is sent directly to the adjuster.
The letter may provide discussion points
regarding the diagnosis or apportionment
as it relates to the calculation of
the impairment outlined in the Guides.
The adjuster may incorporate the Impairment
Resources’ analysis into the letter
they are sending to the physician. If
the ImpairmentLetter™ is authored by
a Physician Reviewer, it is recommended
that the Impairment Resources’ letter
is sent by the adjuster directly to
the physician or is included with the
medical records sent to the physician.
It is suggested that all letters are
sent per jurisdictional requirements
and in most cases it will need to be
copied to the claimant or opposing counsel.

Letter of Clarification: Impairment
Resources recommends a Letter of Clarification
if there is a significant difference
between the objectively supported rating
included in the ImpairmentExpert™ review
and the evaluating physician’s original
rating. It assists the adjuster with
drafting correspondence to the physician
and objecting to the original rating.
The Letter of Clarification provides
the evaluating physician with the processes
and methodologies outlined in the Guides
for achieving the accurate rating. The
goal is to have the evaluating physician
reconsider his or her calculation of
impairment.

Letter of Guidance: This
letter is utilized when
maximum medical improvement
(MMI) is approaching or has
been achieved and the
claimant has not been
assigned an impairment
rating. The Letter of
Guidance proactively helps
obtain an accurate rating
from the treating physician,
state designated doctor, or
independent medical examiner
and often initiates a final
examination. It is
particularly helpful if the
physician has received
advance notice that a
program is in place in which
they may receive assistance
with his or her rating
determination. At the time
the adjuster believes MMI is
approaching or the claimant
is only receiving palliative
treatment, the adjuster
sends the last 3 months of
medical records including
imaging study reports such
as MRI’s and X-rays,
electrodiagnostic reports,
consultation reports,
operative reports, and
physical therapy notes.

Letter of Analysis: Impairment Resources
recommends a Letter of Analysis in those
cases in which a claimant has been rated
and a state designated examination or
independent medical evaluation is being
obtained. It assists the adjuster with
drafting correspondence to the physician
prior to the evaluation. The Letter
of Analysis provides the examiner with
the processes and methodologies outlined
in the Guides for achieving the accurate
rating. The letter is authored by a
Physician Reviewer.
